10 Essential Swimming and Water Safety Skills

During the Pandemic swimming pools have become more popular than ever.  With San Diego’s warm fall weather there is still time make your children water safe.  A client of mine, Kim Shults, runs a non-profit that promotes water safety.

Here are 10 Essential Swimming and Water Safety Skills by Kim Shults

 

#1: Get your face wet The goal is to put your entire face comfortably into the water and open your eyes. Skill

#2: Blow bubbles The goal is to inhale in the air and exhale into the water.

Skill #3: Front float The goal is to have a calm, quiet body face down in the water.

Skill #4: Front glide with kicks The goal is to keep the whole body on top of the water face down in a horizontal position, while moving forward by kicking.

Skill #5: Arm pulls The goal is to use arms to move forward through the water.

Skill #6: Roll over The goal is to keep the body in a horizontal position as you roll from back to front and front to back.

Skill #7: Back float The goal is to have a calm, quiet body and to be able to breathe while face up on top of the water.

Skill #8: Back glide with kicks The goal is to keep the whole body on top of the water face up in a horizontal position, while moving backward by kicking.

Skill #9: Retrieve an object from the bottom The goal is to change body position, control the breath and get to safety.

Skill #10: Jump in, turn around, go back to safety The goal is to submerge, come back to the surface and make it back to safety.
